The Ceiling Attenuation Class rating tells you how well the tile resists sound transmission through the ceiling plane into the shared plenum above.
A tile with an NRC of 0.70 and a CAC of 35 or higher is a meaningful upgrade from a standard tile with an NRC of 0.55 and a CAC of 25. That gap in CAC performance is what separates a conference room where conversations stay private from one where the person in the next suite can follow your negotiation. Standard exposed grid systems have gaps at the perimeter and at tile edges that allow sound to leak around the tile even when the tile itself has a strong CAC rating. Tegular tiles, which drop below the grid face, reduce that edge gap. Concealed grid systems eliminate it almost entirely.
